Ο Ολλανδός ακαδημαϊκός Δικαίου, καθηγητής Sirks, ειδικεύεται στο Ρωμαϊκό δίκαιο και συγκεκριμένα στο βυζαντινό δίκαιο. Η θέση του Regius Καθηγητή Αστικού Δικαίου αφορά σε μία από τις παλαιότερες καθηγεσίες στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης, ενώ χρονολογείται από τη δεκαετία του 1540. Ανάμεσα στους κατόχους της θέσης αυτής στο παρελθόν περιλαμβάνονται διάσημα ονόματα όπως ο Ιταλός νομικός Alberico Gentili το 16ο αιώνα και, κατά τη διάρκεια του 17ου αιώνα, ο Άγγλος νομικός Richard Zouch, ένας από τους πρώτους συγγραφείς διεθνούς δικαίου. Το Ρωμαϊκό δίκαιο αποτελεί την ιστορική ρίζα του συστήματος αστικού δικαίου που δεσπόζει στην ήπειρο της Ευρώπης (συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της Ελλάδας). Η μελέτη του Ιδιωτικού και Δημόσιου Διεθνούς Δικαίου δεν είναι πλήρης χωρίς μια διεξοδική εξέταση του Ρωμαϊκού δικαίου. Ένα εκπληκτικά μεγάλο μέρος της Ρωμαϊκής νομικής λογοτεχνίας έχει επιβιώσει χάρη στην επαγρύπνηση του Ιουστινιανού και άλλων μεταγενέστερων Βυζαντινών αυτοκρατόρων, θέμα το οποίο ο καθηγητής Sirks θα παρουσιάσει στη διάλεξή του.
Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Χρυσόστομος θα κάνει το χαιρετισμό καλωσορίζοντας τον Καθηγητή Sirks στο νησί.
Ο Δρ. Tim Potier, Επικεφαλής της Νομικής Σχολής του UCLan Cyprus, δήλωσε: "Είμαστε στην ευχάριστη θέση να καλωσορίσουμε ένα διακεκριμένο ακαδημαϊκό δικαίου, τον καθηγητή Sirks. Έχοντας αφιερώσει την ακαδημαϊκή του καριέρα στην προώθηση της μελέτης της νομικής ανάπτυξης στον αρχαίο κόσμο της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου, είμαι ευτυχής που είμαι στη θέση να υποδεχθώ τον καθηγητή Sirks στην πρώτη του επίσκεψη στην Κύπρο".
Η εκδήλωση θα είναι η πρώτη στη Σειρά Διαλέξεων «Δίκαιο και Κοινωνία». Ο Δρ. Potier σημείωσε: «Αυτές οι διαλέξεις αντικατοπτρίζουν τη δέσμευση του UCLan Cyprus να προσελκύσει στην περιοχή κορυφαία σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο έρευνα. Η Νομική Σχολή θα διοργανώσει μια σειρά από διαλέξεις, προσκαλώντας στην Κύπρο τους διασημότερους νομικούς μελετητές του κόσμου".

World-Famous Legal Academic to deliver lecture at UCLan Cyprus
UCLan Cyprus is set to welcome one of the world's foremost legal historians to the island. Professor Boudewijn Sirks, Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford University and Fellow of All Souls will be delivering a keynote lecture on Tuesday 11th December entitled: "Roman Law and its Byzantine Renaissances".
A Dutch legal academic, Professor Sirks is an expert in Roman law and in Byzantine law in particular. The position of Regius Professor of Civil Law is one of the oldest professorships at the University of Oxford, dating back to the 1540s. Those who have held the position previously include such famous names as the 16th century Italian jurist Alberico Gentili and, during the 17th century, the English jurist Richard Zouch, one of the earliest writers on international law. Roman law is the historical root for the civil law system which dominates the continent of Europe (including Greece). Study of both Private and Public International law is not complete without a thorough grounding in Roman law. A surprisingly large amount of Roman legal literature has survived thanks to the vigilance of Justinian and other later Byzantine emperors, and it will be on this theme that Professor Sirks will be delivering his keynote lecture.
His Beatitude, Archbishop of New Ioustiniana and All Cyprus, Chrysostomos II, will deliver the address welcoming Professor Sirks to the island.

The event will be the first in the 'Law and Society' Lecture Series. Dr. Potier noted: "These lectures reflect UCLan Cyprus' commitment to bringing world-leading research to the region. The School of Law will be organizing a series of keynote lectures bringing the world's finest legal scholars to Cyprus".
The event will commence at 6.30pm on 11th December at UCLan Cyprus' multi-million Euro and state-of-the-art campus in Pyla (near Larnaka).
