Το Τμήμα Πληροφορικής του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου προκηρύσσει δύο θέσεις Μεταπτυχιακού Συνεργάτη.

Title: Research Assistant

No. of Position(s): 2

Category: Contract for 1 year renewable for two more years

Location: University of Cyprus, Nicosia.

Applications are invited for two part-time or full time Research Assistant positions, PhD degree track, (three years funded position) in the Networks Research Laboratory (NetRL, www.NetRL.cs.ucy.ac.cy) and the Research Laboratory for Foundations of Computing Systems and Theoretical Computer Science (FCS Laboratory, http://fcslab.cs.ucy.ac.cy/) of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus (UCY). The successful applicants will join the EU H2020 project VISORSURF. The positions will be combined with an application for a full-time PhD position at the Department of Computer Science, University of Cyprus, and the research work that will be carried out will be the subject of the doctoral thesis.

THE PROJECT

VISORSURF is a 3.5 year (Jan 2017 - June 2020) H2020 research project funded under the very competitive FET OPEN program (4% success rate). The project is led by the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas-FORTH, Greece, and the consortium includes the University of Cyprus (departments of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering), Cyprus, Fraunhofer IZM, Germany, Signal Generix Ltd, Cyprus, Nano Networking Center of Catalunya-UPC-N3CAT, Spain, and Aalto University, Finland.

The project will undertake the ambitious goal of providing programming concepts and algorithms in crafting the electromagnetic/light behavior of materials. Metamaterials and metasurfaces are presently non-adaptive and non- reusable, restricting their applicability to a single, static functionality per structure and their design remains a task for specialized researchers. VISORSURF aims to develop a hardware platform -the Hyper Surface- that can host metasurface functionalities described in software, adding the potential for hosting multiple functionalities concurrently and adaptively. The Hyper Surface essentially merges existing metasurfaces with nanonetworks, acting as a reconfigurable metasurface whose properties can be changed via a software interface. VISORSURF will study in depth the novel and unexplored theoretical capabilities of the Hyper Surface concept. Two experimental prototypes will be implemented to demonstrate the Hyper Surface concept: a switch-based fabric array as the control medium; and a Graphene based one. A real pilot-application will demonstrate the Hyper Surface potential to adapt to changes in their environment, to interconnect to smart control loops and make use of Information Technology (IT) programming concepts and algorithms in crafting the EM behavior of materials.

Net RL will mainly contribute in the activities related to the provision of communication mechanisms suitable for the nanonode implementation environment (the Hyper Surface controller networking mechanism), the theoretical capabilities of Hyper surfaces when ideal nanonetworking is considered, and the Network-level modelling and simulation of Hyper surface controller networks.

The FCS Laboratory will mainly contribute to the development of a formal and rigorous definition of the Hyper Surface programming interface by organizing its functionality in virtual functions, appropriately specified and validated via formal analysis. These functions will then be translated into Hyper Surface controller node actuation directives. The effort will be complemented by a formal analysis of the proposed communication scheme with respect to computational requirements, energy consumption, and robustness to transmission errors and hardware failures.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking two motivated students with an MSc degree in Computer Science, or related, and competence in an area related to the project. Applicants should be fluent in English. Foreign applications are welcome, and knowledge of Greek is not mandatory. The two positions qualifications are as outlined below:

Position 1: The applicants should have general knowledge in Computer Networks. Competences in as many of the following areas is welcomed: Routing and dissemination protocols, Simulation and Evaluation of Communication Networks, Nanonetworks, and Nature-Inspired Techniques applied in Communication Networks. The candidate is expected to pursue a PhD in the area of NanoNetworks.

Position 2: The applicants should have good algorithmic skills and a strong mathematical background. Competences in formal techniques (automata, models checking, algebras, etc.) and/or programming languages are welcome. The objective of the PhD is to study formal models and verification techniques for networked systems. EMPLOYMENT TERMS

The positions are for a one year contract, renewable for two more years, and will start in September 2017. The minimum monthly salary is equal to € 1100. The salary can vary depending on experience and qualifications. Employee and employer contributions will be deducted from the above amount. The tuition fees of the successful applicants for the PhD programme (for the period of their employment) will be waived.

Enquiries regarding Position 1 should be made to Professor Andreas Pitsillides (Andreas.pitsillides@ucy.ac.cy) and for Position 2 to Associate Professor Anna Philippou (annap@cs.ucy.ac.cy).

General inquiries can be directed to Ms Helen Kakos (kakos@cs.ucy.ac.cy), tel +35722892700.

Formal applications should be submitted over the web: http://applications.ucy.ac.cy/postgraduate_appl/MNG_USER_en.login_frm

Please mention this announcement in your application. The deadline for applications is the 21st April, 2017.
